CHAPTER 30

I skipped school today, thanks to Stella’s recommendation for me to rest as much as possible. How can I sleep after the events of last night, though? My mind won’t stop racing. I’ve texted Lorelei throughout the day, talking about her progress in nursing school. I’ve eaten all of the snacks in my room and watched half a season of Fay’s favorite show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

As a vampire herself, Fay finds the entire show hilarious. I used to think it was kind of creepy, but after seeing what I’ve seen, TV makeup doesn’t faze me. Seeing my friends like that, as what I once imagined monsters to be, it has changed my world.

They are incredible, every single one of them. Fay has magic that is indescribable, and I can’t even imagine what else she’s capable of. Silis is a literal faerie that can freakin’ disappear, and he flirts with every girl he meets instead of showing off the beauty of his wings twenty-four-seven.

Sebastian is a beast, huge and absolutely magical in his dragon form. His black scales are hauntingly beautiful and I wasn’t even afraid when he towered over me. And Alden. He’s…everything. Something about watching him in his most wild form has stirred something within me. Maybe it’s my own wolf itching to be set free. Either way, how could I possibly sleep today?

Fay is out with Sebastian tonight, and I can’t possibly sit in this dorm room for another minute. I have too many questions about the world I live in now. And I need to know more about those final words from that Dreamwalker.

“You can’t keep my queen down. She will come out.”

Stella told me that when the infamous Sage was still alive, she had a following of dark creatures that she bent to her will. Dreamwalkers were among this army. That thing was looking for Sage, and he came to me to do it. It means something, and I aim to get to the bottom of it.

The halls are quiet tonight as I make my way to the library. It’s open to the students all hours of the day and night, so I slip inside the large door and begin searching for whatever I can find on this Sage woman.

I’m three books deep, reading about possession, when Alden slides into a chair beside me. “Ivy, what are you doing in here?”

I turn to find anger in his blue eyes, but I ignore that. “I’m reading, Alden. Isn’t that what libraries are for?”

He leans in so that I’m forced to look at him. “You’re supposed to be resting. You’ve lost enough sleep this week, and you must be worn down after controlling your dream like you did.”

I shrug. “It’s fine, Alden. This is my body and I know what I can handle.” I’m a little angry now. He tries to control me out of some friendly worrying, but I’m tired of the hot and cold of him. “Worry about yourself for once. You haven’t slept all week either.
